Celebration Cakes have always been at the heart of The Kitchen. It’s how we started after all!
Over the years we have seen many trends in decoration, as new products come online and consumers’ tastes change. Who remembers tiered wedding cakes back in the eighties? Rich fruit cakes covered with marzipan and decorated with royal icing and silver horseshoes for luck? The tiers separated with Roman or Grecian pillars perhaps?
For a while gravity cakes were very popular. Fault line cakes made a very brief appearance a few years back. And are you actually a cake artist if you’ve never attempted a geode cake?!
Drip cakes caused us a few headaches – and to be honest tears – in the early days. We mastered them, including the art of painstakingly painting painting the white drip gold, just before metallic drip was developed! Bottles of coloured drip were a game changer too – thank you Australia!
To be fair drip cakes have held their own for a good while now. Meanwhile however there’s another new kid on the block! Sheet Cakes!
Historically the domain of Costco (and also available from other supermarkets) these rectangular cakes covered with frosting were a cost effective cake option – serving a good number of people at what many regard as a reasonable price. We have however taken them a step further – using the idea of colourful buttercream swirls, sprinkles, flowers and butterflies to adorn other cake sizes, shapes and styles.
The stunning fondant covered cakes, with handmade models, bespoke design and amazing artistry are taking a little break for a while. We will look again at what we can offer in the new year, and obviously apologise for any disappointment. However our capacity is reduced and limited – these cakes can take hours if not days to complete and at this busy time of year, with just two of us baking and caking, we are focussing on our many Christmas orders along with the outside catering requests, Afternoon Teas, and cake slices for the counter.
I know that many of you will be thinking why don’t we just employ someone else but believe me we would if we could. I won’t bore you here with all the details but employment law can make it very challenging for small businesses at times, and that’s without the crazy overheads and food inflation!
I want to keep this post upbeat and positive – so will end it on a happy note! Anne and I baked two beautiful, affordable, wedding cakes last week. If you are interested in one for next year then please do get in touch – and congratulations! xxx
